Tired of the rainbow beach ball spinning on your Mac when you are working in adobe illustrator or photoshop? I’ve found a work around that has been working Great at our art department!

The problem usually comes when trying to save or export. When the dialog boxes come up, the pointer turn to the spinning wheel. Sometimes it also just seems to happen for no reason. It can hang there for 10 minutes or more, loosing valuable time and inspiring dread while you hope it doesn’t crash out.

If you are seeing the spinning Ball for More than 20 seconds Here’s the trick. Hit the apple, alt escape combo that brings up your force quit box. now DO NOT force quit the app in question; go down to the bottom of the list and restart the finder. Now count to ten while your finder windows disappear and reopen. Click back on the illustrator icon in the icon bar and see if the dreaded spinning ball is gone.

Usually you can also tell something is wrong because the active “save” button is solid blue instead of pulsing. Clicking on the solid button is often what triggers the spiny wheel. Hopefully now the beach ball is gone and the button (if you were trying to save or export) is pulsing. If you still have the beach ball after 20 seconds try restarting the finder one more time. Sometimes it takes twice to snap the Mac out of the problem. Now 9 times out of ten this will get the program working again in seconds instead of minutes.

You are welcome!

      Well Jelly Bean,

If other tricks don’t work you might be staring down a ram shortage. My machine at work runs fine if I run Photoshop and Illustrator, but when i add After Effects to the mix it just won’t run. I have to shut down illustrator and just run photoshop and After Effects. Limit how many files you have open in each program, I’m bad about having 20 or so open documents in a program. If your machine is older than 5 years is older than 5 years, it might be time to think about a new one. It also matters if you get a lighter machine or a more pro version. If you want to do anything with videos you need mega ram. Of course you might also have a virus or trojan horse. My wife and I try to go through and weed out adware and things that we don’t remember installing. Our kids use our machines at home and I fear that they stumble into viruses in search of free internet games from time to time. If your Internet browser begins to open up to a different sight than you are used to… that’s a bad sign. I keep mine on Google as the launch program. When it starts opening to Bing or other less know search engines i get concerned. I noticed that the new OS has an updated rainbow wheel. so at least they tried to make it prettier. Still hate to see it pop up and stay up! Keep up the good fight.
