Why Can’t I Save as a PNG in Photoshop?

The most likely reason is that you are working in CMYK mode. PNG format isn’t compatible with CMYK. Convert the document to RGB and PNG and several other options will now be available for saving.

Jpgs can handle either color space, but I always save them as RGB also, since some clients’ image viewers can only process 3 channels ( this makes turns the CMYK into a weird negative look)
